AN EPILOGUE

When the police arrive, the discussion is still underway, and many details still remain unclear. Eventually, however, enough people agree to hand over Eva Ushiromiya. She, herself, claimed to have been involved, after all, and through discussion, an uneasy conclusion was made that perhaps she was the only one who could have done the deed.

The police take your statements, but you are not taken into custody. The snow is excavated, the staff are relieved of Romero's body, and the train is able to move once more. The tension does not leave the train as its journey continues.

It is only several days later that you receive the news--the police have found Eva Ushiromiya guilty of the murder of Andrea Romero. Apparently, the Ushiromiya family has been under investigation for their illicit activities, putting additional strain on their already meager finances. They were struggling to keep their foothold on their reign, and their international activities were at risk--including one of their only financial fronts in New York City, Apex Investments.

Romero had somehow found out about this and wanted to "work" with the Ushiromiyas--cooperate with his plans to expand, or be further ruined in the public image. Eva, of course, wouldn't allow it to pass.

Perhaps with time you can put this incident behind you. But a death like this causes ripples, and those closely tied to Romero will definitely feel them.

The question is...what will you do now?

Thank you again for participating in this murder mystery! We appreciate your patience throughout all this, and for exploring our little experimental game. Feel free to finish up whatever threads you have, or have some end game conversations. We ask that you take a few minutes to leave some feedback and criticism so we can make this experience even better in the future.

WHODUNNIT?

On the evening of the sixth day, Ernest gathers the passengers and staff for another meeting in the lounge. He fiddles with his label, looking exceedingly nervous. Then again, he's been a mess ever since this whole affair began.

The staff fall quiet. There's a palpable tension in the air. Ernest clears his throat, crossing his arms behind his back.

"I've just received word that the police will be arriving shortly, along with additional help and supplies. I hope you've found whoever committed this horrible deed, for if you don't...well, we can all expect our trips to be delayed."

A pause. He wipes his brow with a blue handkerchief.

"What I want to know is--who did it, and why?"

[OOC: Welcome to the parlor discussion. This is where you'll take all the evidence you've gathered so far and determine whodunnit, and why! This will be formatted similarly to a murdergame trial in that discussion will continue until a culprit is determined. At any time, you may cast your vote as to who you think the culprit is and why they did it. Good luck!]

A dead body. Romero's dead body. After Ozaki confirmed the means of death, it's become painfully apparent that one of your fellow passengers is a murderer. After a brief initial investigation, Ernest hurriedly shooed everyone out of the sleeper car so the staff could drape the body in white cloth and shove it somewhere in the caboose.

The snow continues to pile up slowly outside the train, and it doesn't look like you're going to be leaving anytime soon. The air is thick with tension as you realize that perhaps the only way you're going to be continuing your trip on time is by figuring out whodunit.

The question is, where to look first?

OOC: As mentioned yesterday, we are now in the investigation portion of our game! What does this mean? Well, it means you are free to continue mingling as you have been, but you can investigate certain locations to turn up more evidence regarding the murder mystery.

Multiple people are welcome to participate in a single investigation thread, and multiple people can investigate the same area more than once to find different information. Additionally, we encourage people to question other player and non-player characters to try and figure out what they know and see if it's consistent with your clues! Chat with your friends, spin some theories, and see where the trail leads you.

Not sure where else you should investigate? Take a look at the investigation notes and see if there's anything odd that stands out to you or any questions that need answering. Alternatively, try talking to other people to see what they know, or interrogate the staff members. Different staff members, such as the engineers, the luggage clerk, etc. may have seen different things. Conversation sometimes reveals hidden truths!

A final parlor discussion will be posted on Saturday, December 3rd, where you will determine who you think the culprit is.

It's morning on the Disorient Express, around 8 AM, and the train is completely still. In fact, the train hasn't moved since 12 AM last night. If you peer out the window to your cabin, you will see a blinding blanket of white snow staring back at you, piled at least two feet high. And it's still coming down, albeit slower than before.

Perhaps some of you have been delivered breakfast in your cabin, or others have headed towards the dining car to be served breakfast. The staff all look exhausted as they dish out pastries, coffee, and tea. You are soon informed that the railroad has been blocked by a large snowdrift, and will not be able to move until they clear it away. They profusely apologize for the inconvenience, and assure you they are working as quickly as possible to remedy the situation.

You hardly have enough time to shove a croissant in your mouth when you hear a piercing, animalistic shriek from the sleeper car hallway, followed by something shattering.

Maybe you should investigate what's happening.

Once everyone is aboard, the train pulls away from the station, its pistons slowly but surely accelerating as it peels through the countryside. Those who check their cabins will find a complimentary bottle of champagne, as well as toiletries and slippers. Next to the door is a bell on a hook, to be rung if you need to summon a staff member to your cabin. Your journey is underway, and now, all you have to do is sit back and relax, right?

Relaxation might come easier to some than others. There's an underlying current of unease as darkness begins to fall over the train. But perhaps that's just nerves from traveling. After all, what terrible things could happen on a train as decadent as this?

OOC: Private conversations are now open, as well as private chats with the NPCs! Let us know if your character will be investigating any part of the train in your toplevel! Additionally, if you'd like to talk to an NPC in your toplevel, please note it in your comment title.

If you want, you can note your character's location on the night of the murder by commenting to the pre-murder check-in by Wednesday, 12:00 PM EST. Who knows? Your character might hear or see something unusual....

Your journey starts idyllic enough. Steam rises above the tracks, filtering the light from the windows above. The Disorient Express sits in the station, its freshly cleaned blue chassis sparkling in the dim light. The well-worn, elegant platform is bustling with passengers running to meet their departure time. You're one of them. For whatever reason or another, your travels have brought you here, to Istanbul, to make your way to Paris.

The crew--which all seem to be human-sized, anthropomorphic mustelids--scurry back and forth between the platform and the luggage car, helping guests carry their steamer trunks and other bags onto the train. Badgers, weasels, and otters of all varieties can be seen in bright blue outfits with gold buttons and filigree.

Near the front of the train at the far end of the platform is a large brown stoat standing on his hind legs. Unlike the other staff members, he wears a black uniform, marking him as the train conductor. He checks his pocket watch, tilting his head to the side. He takes out a handkerchief and wipes off the face, puts both back in his pocket, and wanders off to help passengers and check tickets.

"Bonjour, bonjour, you have your ticket? Ah, excellent, let's get you on board!"

The train whistle blows, twice, indicating that the train is due to depart soon. Better get your stuff on board and get settled in, perhaps meet your fellow passengers. After all, you'll be stuck together on this train for the foreseeable future--may as well make some friends...or enemies, if that's what you're into.
OOC: Welcome to the first episode of Grief Street--The Disorient Express! Characters are free to wander around the platform or the interior of the train. If you'd like to talk to one of the NPCs, Andrea Romero or Ernest Devineaux, please put it in your comment title!

As discussion begins to wind to a close, you decide to vote on who to give up to the police. After a quick telephone call, the cops pull up to the estate, the red-and-blue lights illuminating the rain-soaked driveway. It's only a matter of time before you'll have to give up the suspect a majority of you have decided to vote out--Uncle Deadly.

Congratulations--you've found the murderer. Ironic how a man framed for murder all these years ago finally became the monster so many people thought he was. It seems like the nightmare is nearly over. As you begin to depart from the lounge room, you think on everything that's transpired here. What will you do, now that Mr. Lionheart is dead? Although you can rest assured that Deadly will be locked behind bars for what he's done tonight, can you truly consider this to be justice?

This is not a question so easily answered.

Thank you again for participating in this murder mystery! We appreciate your patience throughout all this, and for exploring our little experiment. Feel free to finish up whatever threads you have, or have some end game conversations. Don't forget to leave feedback and criticism so we can make this experience even better.

It's half-past nine when everyone reconvenes in the lounge room once more. The tension in the air is palpable as eyes dart from one suspect to another, wondering who will crack first. As the night wears on, it becomes more and more apparent that something must be done. As interesting as it would be to Weekend-at-Bernie's Mr. Lionheart's corpse, someone will find out about the murder eventually. The culprit must be caught, unless everyone else wishes to hang on their behalf.

You've gathered more clues from the rest of the manor--now, it's time to put everything together and catch a murderer.

As before, this part of the murder mystery is a freeform discussion of the evidence and potential theories on whodunnit. Feel free to interject in other people's threads, accuse people, lie, cheat...whatever it takes to get the truth. If you want to ask for any mod clarification, feel free to request it in your comment title.

Remember--the game concludes on Saturday, where you will be asked to vote on who you think murdered Mr. Lionheart. If a majority of characters vote for a suspect, that suspect will be arrested, and you'll be told whether the guess was correct or not. Whatever your conclusion is, make sure you don't split the vote--for splitting the vote will have worse implications for everyone involved. Get to it--there's a murder to be solved!

Once the initial discussion begins to die down, it becomes more and more evident that you don't have the full picture. Arguments erupt, conversations become circular, and tensions continue to rise as fingers are pointed every which way. Eventually, you all decide to split up and search the rest of the manor for more evidence. Nobody leaves the estate grounds until you're able to tie the murder to someone here.

Time to investigate.

With clues and information in hand, you gather in the lounge room on the second floor of the Lionheart estate. The room is dimly lit, casting long shadows against the deep red walls and intricately woven carpet. Plush chairs and chaise lounges are scattered around, inviting you to take a seat. In the corner of the room is a tall grandfather clock, tick tick tick-ing the seconds away as you sit. A rotary phone sits dormant on a small serving table, waiting for someone to pick it up and call the police.

There's now the matter of the dead man and who killed him--and, surely, it must be one of your number who did the deed, as you were the last group of people to interact with him. This looks bad for everyone. The police would have a field day with this. Everyone's a suspect, and unless you want to walk out of here in handcuffs, you better make sure you pin the true culprit.

Better start talking--you don't want to be the one accused of murder, now do you?

This part of the murder mystery is a freeform discussion of the evidence and potential theories on whodunnit. Feel free to interject in other people's threads, accuse people, lie, cheat...whatever it takes to get the truth. You're free to also come up with whatever props one could realistically find in a lounge room. If you want to ask for any mod clarification, feel free to request it in your comment title! We'll get to it as soon as possible.

Rain begins to pelt the roof and windows at around 7:50 PM. The wind shrieks and howls outside, threatening to claw its way into the very house and tear it apart. Appropriately dreadful weather for the dreadful night that would soon ensue.

At around ten past eight, a terrifying, blood-curdling howl is heard from upstairs. Captain Ahab, screaming of murder, bloody murder!

It takes little time for you all to scramble upstairs and into Mr. Lionheart's room, but the scene that greets you is ghastly. It's hard to make out an expression of any kind, but he looks almost...angry. Perhaps a tinge fearful. Whatever the case may be, it's the last expression he'll ever make. For currently, Mr. Lionheart's dead body dangles halfway out of his bed, threatening to fall onto the floor.

A peel of thunder shakes the very foundations of the house as lightning streaks across the sky, illuminating Edgar Lionheart's frozen face. Looks like dinner will have to wait until later.

Dare you investigate?

The invite instructed you to come to the manor to celebrate Mr. Edgar Lionheart's 75th birthday party at precisely 7 PM. An ominous peel of thunder rumbled in the distance as the guests began to arrive at the manor. Passing through the estate's grand gates was like passing some invisible threshold from one mundane realm to one more fantastical and heightened in reality.

As the front door opened and you walked into the vestibule, you were greeted by Mr. Lionheart himself--a large, bearded man with graying hair wearing an expensive royal blue tuxedo. He smiled, holding out his hand for a handshake.

"Welcome to the Lionheart Estate, my good fellow. May I take your coat? Ah--dinner will be at 8 PM, following a speech. I have a few important announcements to make...but that can wait until later. For now, help yourself to a few drinks--we're here to celebrate, after all."

And with that, he departed to tend to the other guests. The sound of a grandfather clock somewhere in the house echoed throughout the hallway, counting down the minutes until dinner. The entrance hall loomed before you, beckoning you to...well, enter, if you dare.

One thing was sure--this would be an unforgettable evening.

Welcome to the murder mystery! Make sure that you carefully read over your dossiers to understand the scenario. Each character has been given a pre-murder task, which can be completed at any point during the week. The murder investigation will go up on Saturday, June 4th. In the meantime, just enjoy the party and mingle with the guests while you can. Perhaps you'll discover some interesting information for later....
